3 Best Practices for Keeping Your Data Safe While Online

Current world events are tough right now. And unfortunately, cyber attacks from Europe are on the rise, according to our Federal partners. Here at Round Rock ISD, I want to reassure you that the school District is taking every means necessary to keep you and your data safe. We are monitoring the world situation, along with other districts and agencies. But, we can’t do it alone. We need your help!

When you’re using your device, please do it responsibly. Here are some quick things you should be doing:

  1. Make sure your passwords to your social media accounts are complex. Choose strong passwords using 10 characters and combinations of upper case letters, lower case letters, symbols, and numbers. Do not include personal information. Consider changing your password at least every 90 days when information is sensitive. Use different passwords for various online activities because if one password is compromised, all will be compromised. Never share your password.
  2. Enroll in multi-factor authentication (MFA) whenever you are given the chance.
MFA is a security enhancement that allows you to present two pieces of evidence when logging in to an account. The evidence falls into any of these three categories: something you know (like a password or PIN), something you have (like a smart card), or something you are (like your fingerprint). Most websites you use for everyday life, like social media and streaming services.
  3. Be careful of who you give personal information to. Sharing personal information with others you do not know personally is one of your biggest risks online. Sharing sensitive information such as your address, phone number, family members’ names, car information, passwords, work history, credit status, social security numbers, birth date, school names, passport information, driver’s license numbers, insurance policy numbers, loan numbers, credit/ debit card numbers, PIN numbers, and bank account information is risky and should be avoided.

Be safe, and drop me a line if you have any questions.
